Which bottles are actually Japanese whisky?
Until recently, a bottle could be labelled Japanese whisky while containing liquid distilled somewhere else entirely. The Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association standard, in force since April 2024, defines what the term means. Not every famous bottle meets it.
What the standard requires
To be labelled Japanese whisky under the JSLMA standard, the whisky must be mashed, fermented, distilled, matured for at least three years and bottled in Japan, using water drawn in Japan. The standard is a trade-body rule rather than a law, and it binds member companies — which is why bottles outside it still exist and still sell.
This matters most when you are paying an export premium. A world blend at a Japanese-whisky price is the single most common way to overpay in this category.

Does not meet the standard
Does not meet the JSLMA standard, usually because some of the liquid was distilled outside Japan. Several producers say so openly — this is a statement about the category a bottle belongs to, not about its quality.
| Bottle | Producer | Japan price |
|---|---|---|
| Nikka From The Barrel | Nikka Whisky | ¥3,300 |
| Suntory Ao | Suntory | ¥5,000 |
| Nikka Coffey Malt | Miyagikyo Distillery | ¥5,500 |
Not declared
We found no producer statement either way. This is not an accusation of anything; it means the question is unanswered.
| Bottle | Producer | Japan price |
|---|---|---|
| Suntory Torys Classic | Suntory | ¥900 |
| Black Nikka Clear | Nikka Whisky | ¥1,000 |
| Mars Iwai | Mars Shinshu Distillery | ¥1,800 |
| Nikka Days | Nikka Whisky | ¥2,500 |
| Mars Lucky Cat | Mars | ¥4,200 |
A caution about this page
Classifications here are our reading of each producer's own statements. Where a producer has not said either way, we list the bottle as not declared rather than guessing — “not declared” is not an accusation. If you have a producer statement that corrects anything here, please tell us.
