Is it Japanese whisky?

Mashed, fermented, distilled, matured and bottled in Japan, per the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association standard.

How it tastes

Still distilled over direct coal fire, which almost nobody does anymore and which you can taste: char, weight, a faint salt from the sea outside. Yoichi is the closest Japan gets to a Highland distillery, which is exactly what Masataka Taketsuru went to Scotland to learn. At 45% with real body it takes a little water well, and at around ¥5,500 on the shelf it is one of the few Japanese single malts still priced like a drink rather than a collectible. Peat is present but restrained, so Scotch drinkers convert easily while bourbon drinkers should expect less sweetness than the price suggests.
