Suntory Special Reserve: Price, Taste and How It Compares
Suntory Special Reserve is the bottle to look at when “Japanese whisky” starts to sound too expensive. It is a domestic blend, not a single malt, and the current Japanese retailer reference in our database is ¥2,728 including tax for 700ml.
What it tastes like
The profile is floral, lightly woody and gently sweet. Vanilla and fruit sit above a short, clean finish. It is not a dramatic whisky, which is precisely why it works as an everyday bottle.
Suntory introduced the expression in the 1960s. It belongs to the same broad domestic blending tradition as Old and Royal, rather than the export-led prestige line of Yamazaki.
Special Reserve vs Royal vs Toki
Toki is the lightest and most obviously highball-oriented. Royal has more weight and oak. Special Reserve sits below Royal in price and intensity, with enough body for a neat pour but no reason to treat it like a single malt.
Our records mark all three as meeting the JSLMA standard. That tells you where the whisky is made; it does not tell you which one you will prefer.
